Where can you ride a Bird scooter?

Bird scooters must be ridden in the street, not the sidewalk.

You must park the scooter so that it does not block sidewalks or streets.

Do you need a license to operate a Bird scooter?

Yes, you need a valid driver’s license to operate the scooters.

Is the drinking limit the same?

Yes, you can still get a DWI while operating a scooter. You should not operate a Bird scooter if you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication etc.

Is there an age limit?

You must be 18+ years or older to operate.

Do you need a helmet while riding a Bird Scooter?

Raleigh city law requires a helmet be worn while operating any LPCs (low-powered cycles), including bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, and scooters. Nevertheless, Bird’s user terms strongly recommend wearing a helmet. They’ll even send you a free one if you pay for the cost of shipping.

Can you take a Bird scooter out of Raleigh?

No, the scooters must stay inside the city limits.

Is there a weight limit?

There is a limit of 200 pounds.

What happens if you get hurt?

When you download the Bird app and agree to the user terms, you assume all liability for medical costs and injuries that result from the scooters.

Bird Scooter Laws on the Horizon

While the Bird user agreement is comprehensive, state and city laws apply to its operation in each market. Given that Bird scooters did not seek Raleigh City Council’s approval before arriving, local lawmakers are currently working on finalizing regulations. The proposed outline states that if Bird follows the rules, they will be able to remain operating through July 31st of next year.
